Is The Secret to Happiness This Simple Reframing Technique?

This challenging time has allowed me to learn. It has allowed me to recognize that I seek to control nearly every situation that I’m in. In fact, when I’m not in control, I become irritable, depressed, and difficult to be around. However, now that I’m in a circumstance that I ultimately can’t control, it has taught me to accept that fact. It has also taught me to release control in other situations as well—projects at work, relationships with friends. I can not control others who refuse to wear masks, who draw near when they walk past. I can only control myself and my own actions.

On Being Kind to Yourself During Quarantine

As I ran up Green street toward the Presidio, I felt the exhaustion in my limbs and in my lungs. My pace had slowed to what was almost a walk, but I wanted to make it up the hill without stopping. Unfortunately, as I reached the halfway point, I felt myself give up. I stopped, placed my hands on my knees, and tried to catch my breath. Looking up at the distance to the top of the hill, I felt ashamed and aggravated at myself. Why couldn’t I have just pushed myself a little harder? Today, I wanted to write about a strange side effect that has occurred during quarantine: disappointment.
