Tane Vegan Izakaya

What: Vegan Sushi Restaurant on Oahu

Location: 2065 S Beretania St., Honolulu, HI 96826

Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 4:30 PM to 10 PM PST

Why We Love It: With all the benefits of skewing your diet toward more plant-based/plant-forward options, we love that this vegan izakaya is making it easier to enjoy delicious Japanese food without having to worry about where the fish were sourced from, how they were caught, or any other questions you might have about animal products. It’s also so cool to see everything that the chefs are able to do to create unique specialty rolls that taste (and have the mouth feel) that many of us crave from sushi. As a vegetarian, I am usually limited to one or two rolls at sushi restaurants, but here, I could eat it all.

More good news: If any of your friends/family are stubborn carnivores, there’s a super cute local pizza spot right next door (but the food is so delicious that we think they’ll be just fine here).

What to Consider:

  • Price: As with most sushi restaurants, Tane Vegan Izakaya is not cheap. You wouldn’t want it to be! With the presentation & flavors, it makes sense that you’re paying for more than just good produce. After living in San Francisco (and dining at the vegan sushi restaurant in the Mission), the prices were very normal to me. However, having grown up on Oahu, I can see them being surprising, so be sure to prepare yourself and your dinner companions so that you can go in, dine, and enjoy the experience without a surprise at the end.

  • Time limit: There are seating times that have to be adhered to, so your time in the restaurant is limited to 1.5 (or maybe it’s 2) hours. This is fairly standard for an izakaya, but if you’re used to long European dinners or casual dining, this may be something unfamiliar. We did feel that they reminded us a few more times than necessary during our dining experience 😂, but we were wrapping up at the perfect time anyway.
