About

Hey there!

Welcome to the Kook Aunty! I created this as a place of wonder, where I can feed my curiosity (and hopefully yours), and rediscover the magic of our world. Here, I’m hoping to ask more questions, have fun finding answers, and present opportunities that allow us to care for and engaging with our incredible world.

About Kook Aunty:

Recently, my three-year-old nephew came running down the hall of my grandmother’s home in Palm Desert with wide eyes. He ran up to me and held my hand, whispering, “it’s magic!”

“What’s magic?” I asked him.

“The house!” He exclaimed.

What had happened was that he’d seen our pull-out sofa go from a sofa to a bed. This was something he’d never experienced before and the fact that one household furnishing could transform into another could only be explained by one thing: magic!

Though I know a pull-out sofa bed is functional because of the way the metal frame is put together allowing it to be tucked underneath the sofa cushions, this is still incredible when I think about it. Someone had to figure out how to create that foldable frame and how to get a mattress that could fold up with it beneath a sofa’s seat. And, when I really thought about it, I took the fact that this existed for granted, but never bothered to ask how the metal frame came together or what type of material sofa bed mattresses were made from in order to fold.

I was missing out on the wonder that my nephew saw every day.

When I think about what really interests me as well: the ocean, the forests, the animals that live in it, I realized that there is so much I take for granted and never think about.

That’s why I wanted to create Kook Aunty. Here, I’ll challenge myself to ask more questions to discover more of what makes this planet so, well, magical!

Why is it called Kook Aunty?

Isn’t kook a derogatory term? Yeah, it is. Kook behavior can be dangerous, especially out in the water.

However, there is something liberating about adopting kook behavior when it comes to figuring out how this world functions. With no self-awareness or inhibitions, it’s a lot easier to ask those dumb questions that get pretty cool answers. And it’s a hell of a lot easier to write/create content if I’m less worried about what other people will think and more interested in answering simple questions that I’ve never bothered to ask before. So that’s what you’ll find here. No fears, lots of questions, and a go-for-it attitude!
